Clevedon have left it late that’s for sure, but they finally threw off the cloak of mediocrity, which they been forced to wear for much of the season, to emerge as a team fully entitled to take a place at the top table.

Jupiter Pluvius prevented any vestige of play until 2pm at which point skipper Jake Lintott won the toss and invited the home side to bat. With the much in form Danny Williams, seven overs one for 19, and Josh Davey, eight overs 1 for 11, polishing off the openers in short order Lansdown found themselves floundering and they were further inconvenienced when left arm spinner Will Thirkell purveyed his prestidigitation to full effect to finish with figures of 3 for 24 from seven overs.

A really heavy downpour appeared certain to curtail play for the duration with Lansdown 123 for 5 from 34 overs but the clouds dispersed eventually leaving Clevedon to chase down a Duckworth Lewis amended score of 98 from 20 overs.

Clevedon’s top order have wobbled for much of the season but there was no sign of nerves on this occasion as openers Masoor Khan and Harry Ellison set about their task with relish. They put on 25 in no time before Harry departed with 19, four fours off 13 deliveries, but Mas ensured there was no let up for the hosts as he led the charge to victory with a run a ball 48 not out, an innings punctuated by four fours and a six.

With Josh Davey undefeated on 16, Clevedon swept home from just 16 overs to keep the relegation wolf from the door, at least for the time being, with just three more matches to play.

Clevedon entertain Bridgwater this Saturday and only a victory will do if Taunton S A and Bristol are to be kept at arms length in the scramble to avoid the drop.

Standings, all played 15. 1 Potterne, 270 pts; 2 Bath 231; 3 Bedminster 206; 4 Bridgwater 203; 5 Downend 183; 6 Cheltenham 167; 7 Lansdown 164; 8 Clevedon 154; 9 Taunton St Andrews 131; 10 Bristol 129.
